If you were not able to complete your homework last week, please bring the following items to school as soon as possible:
1. A framed family photo to display in the classroom (unless I still have your family photo from last year)! I have extra frames, if needed.
2. A summer souvenir or other favorite thing to share with the class. Choose an object - like a photo, postcard, project or collectable - that helps us get to know you. Please no pets, food, electronics or large items.
Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Thursday, we will practice journaling and writing in nature at Tom McCall Forest. Please make sure your Plover is dressed appropriately for the weather - we will go in the rain!
We have a new Out and About teacher at Level 2! Janelle was a regular chaperone on our O&As last year and this year she will also be helping schedule and lead activities. Below is a short blurb from Janelle.
"Hello to all Level 2 Families from Janelle Smith. I will be helping to coordinate and facilitate Level 2 Out and Abouts with Becky and Laura this year. I am a FGCS parent; my daughter Jamie is in Level 1 with Ms. Eva. I am a special education teacher with the Forest Grove School District currently placed mornings at Echo Shaw Elementary School. I love to ride my bike and read. Out and Abouts are such an important and engaging part of what we do at the Community School. I look forward to learning along with our Level 2 students!"
Volunteer Opportunities
Our first community breakfast was a great success and I'm looking forward to continuing this tradition all year! Thank you to our volunteers who provided delicious cereal, mini bagels and watermelon! There is 1 spot available for breakfast donations this Friday, September 20th. You can also sign up for future dates. Please click here: http://vols.pt/drMimF to sign up on VolunteerSpot!
Scholastic Book Orders
Last week, your Plover should have brought home information about Scholastic Reading Clubs. You can also view this month's selections and submit your order online at https://orders.scholastic.com/L79X9. When you place your order online, you'll help earn FREE books for our class and you also get a $5 coupon to use on your next online order! September orders are due Tuesday, September 24th.
Other Important Info
School supply fees ($25) can be turned into me or paid in the office. Snack donations - pretzels, crackers, raisins or granola bars - can be brought in any time.
Weekly Review
We took our first trip into the computer lab last week to do some writing. For some students, this was their first visit to the computer lab! The 4th graders helped show other students how to open programs, how to change the fonts, and how to print. Each Plover typed at least 5 clues about themselves. We will put these "Who Am I?" papers in the hallway outside our classroom. Come see if you can guess which clues your child wrote!
We are spending the first weeks of school getting to know each other and learning about classroom routines. Each student has created a super hero to display in the classroom, along with some writing about a "real life" super power that they will share with our classroom community this year. We have also played several team building games, including a new class favorite - partner monster making! We will continue to have classroom discussions about expectations and rules for our community. The students are very concerned about making sure everyone feels included in class and on the playground, and they all have great ideas about how to be great students, citizens and stewards!
Communication
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Parents and students can e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also leave a voice message on the class phone, come into the classroom before or after school, or call me before 8PM at home.
