Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we have our final Out & About to Fernhill Wetlands from 9:30 - 2:00. When we return to FGCS, 4th graders will visit the Level 3 classrooms and 3rd graders will meet the new Level 2 students!
Bridging Ceremony - Thursday, June 6th
This event honors our 'bridging' students (2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th graders) who are moving up to the next level at FGCS or moving on to high school. Parents and other family members of bridging students are encouraged to attend. Doors will open for the event at 12:30 p.m. and the event will start at 1 p.m. Allow time to park your car on streets nearby and make your way to Taylor-Meade. Click here for a map of the Pacific University campus.
Parents: You may take students home immediately after the ceremony, but please make sure you check out directly with teachers so we can keep track of everyone. Students who return to campus after Bridging will be dismissed at 3:20.
Field Day at Lincoln Park- Friday, June 7th
Our annual Field Day takes place on the last day of school. We will walk as a class to Lincoln Park and return to school for our regular dismissal at 1:05. On Field Day, students will eat lunch (pizza, watermelon and juice) at the park. There is no school lunch service that day because it's a Friday. Students are welcome to bring lunch from home if they don't want pizza or will need more fuel for the day.
Volunteer Opportunities
Out & About Chaperones - Needed 6/5 (Fernhill Wetlands).
State (SBAC) Testing
This week, Plovers will complete the Smarter Balanced ELA (reading/writing) Performance Task on Monday and Tuesday. This activity asks students to read 2-3 short articles and respond to a narrative, opinion or informational prompt using evidence from the texts. Our testing times are in the afternoon (2:00 - 3:00), so please make sure your student has an extra snack that they can eat after recess.
Weekly Review
Last week, we visited the Backyard Garden for a game called "Migration Headache!" The students became migrating shorebirds (Golden Plovers) and traveled between nesting and wintering habitats. Along their journeys from South America to the Arctic, they experienced some of the threats that affect the survival of migratory shorebird populations. Our game focused on how human actions can impact the populations of different species of animals.
Thank you so much to all the families who were able to attend Celebrations of Learning last week. I also want to thank all the parents who joined us for Out & Abouts and library visits, donated breakfast and snacks, and washed classroom dishes and towels this year! I am so grateful for your generosity and support!
To wrap up the year, Plovers are working on their memory books. Students have been thinking about some of their favorite memories from the year and here are a few of their ideas:
- Finishing the mini golf course
- Writing a whole book about animals
- Lots of people donating Dino Dollars to buy a movie party
- Going to the beach and the zoo
- Learning about Metro (even though it was smelly!)
- Helping in the Backyard Garden
- Having time to explore at Fernhill Wetlands
- Classroom jobs and vacation day
- Presenting at All School Meeting about the new lunchboxes
