Weekly Review
We learned a lot about the history of Forest Grove during our Out and About. Mary Jo Morelli took us on an exciting tour of Pacific University, Main Street and the historical districts in Forest Grove. We saw buildings that had been moved, evidence of old train tracks, and metal guard rails built into the curbs to guide horse-drawn carriages! It was fascinating to see so much history right around our school. Students painted pictures of what they thought Forest Grove might have looked like 100 years ago and their beautiful watercolors are on display in the hallway.
We had an All School meeting last Friday and some students got up on stage to talk about our writing and art project based on the book My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks. We presented the collaborative writing that we did about members of our school "family" and showed the found object portraits that we made of Vanessa, Rick and Teresa. Students have published their writing about a family member and they will be finishing up their found object portraits in Art. This work will be on display during conferences.
Math Notes
In Third Grade math, we are exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction. We will continue to practice computation of and strategies for addition and subtraction facts up to 20. Students are expected to know these facts without hesitation. Mastering basic addition and subtraction facts will greatly help students when we begin working with larger numbers and learning about multiplication later in third grade.
For homework, students need to complete Home Connection 2: Addition and Subtraction Fact Families. Every student should complete the challenge problem. Your student may need support writing their story problem.
This week in Fourth Grade Math, we will continue to focus on using the area model of multiplication (also know as array) to develop our fluency and automaticity with multiplication facts. The expectation is that by the end of fourth grade all students will have a strong fluency with multiplication facts. Home Support: ask your student about the array model of multiplication and have them draw you a picture to illustrate this concept; help your Plover with multiplication fluency by creating multiplication flashcards and/or practice these facts together.
For homework this week, students need to complete An Array of Family Families (Independent Worksheet 1) — which focuses on the rectangular area model of multiplication. This is an assignment that students should be able to complete independently. However, your student may need support reading and understanding the directions. Please let Becky know if your Plover struggles with this assignment. You can contact Becky at [email protected].
