Weekly Review
The Plovers had their first pay day last week! Students completed a weekly reflection about their classroom job responsibilities. Then, they received their first paycheck from the payroll department! Students must fill out a deposit slip to deposit their paycheck into the class bank, and they keep track of their earnings in a bank log. They can also earn bonuses for completing extra assignments or stewardship jobs and receive fines for not taking care of classroom resources or personal belongings. Next week, the Plover store will be open and students can withdraw money from their bank accounts to buy items like Show And Tell or Teacher's Chair For The Day, but they also need to save up money for their first rent payment!
Last week, we went to Stub Stewart State Park for Native American Exploration Day. Students completed activities with their clan groups at three rotating stations. At one station, students learned about native NW coast artistic traditions including finding mineral pigments, making paint and making paintbrushes. Plovers then mixed and used earth pigments to create artwork related to their clan crest. At another station, students learned a legend related to their clan's spirit animal. Family groups worked together to retell and act out their story. Finally, everybody went on a 2 mile hike to see what it would be like to gather food and resources from the forest instead of being able to drive to a store! Groups kept their eyes peeled for critters in the forest like newts, slugs, beetles and more. While they hiked, students also tried to identify plants that are native to Oregon forests. They each had a "nature necklace" with a picture and facts about a plant. Upon finding their plant, they shared a fact about its medicinal and culinary use with their hiking group.
