Math Notes
In Third Grade Math, we started a new unit called Surveys and Line Plots. During this unit, students will be collecting, representing and describing data. We started last week by finding out what places third graders like to read, shop and play! Students worked in pairs to organize the survey data from their classmates and make posters. This week, we will develop a survey question to ask other classes and carry out a larger investigation!
This week in Fourth Grade Math, we will continue our work in the second unit from Investigations: "Describing the Shape of the Data." During this unit, students collect, represent, describe and interpret data. Students will also look at the probability of various events. Throughout this unit, we will be working towards these goals:
- Design an effective survey question to compare two groups
- Organize and represent data bout two groups in order to compare the groups
- Describe the shape of the data from a numerical set (mean, median, mode)
- Use data to compare two groups
- Use evidence from a set of data to support an argument
- Describe the likelihood of an event
Weekly Review
Last week, we were able to spend some time in the Backyard Garden with Erin, Eva and the Barn Swallows. Plovers paired up with Level 1 students and were able to choose from several activities, such as buddy reading, watercolors, writing poetry, planting garlic or exploring with a hand lens! We will do more buddy activities with the Barn Swallows this year, including more reading and writing.
Last month, we sent our first videos to our pen pals in Switzerland! They had already learned some basic English vocabulary, like "boy" and "girl" and how to say their age, so we introduced ourselves using these words. Their teacher, Barbara, said they would be learning the English words for body parts next, so the Plovers also included names of a few simple body parts. Our pen pals just replied with their own videos and each student in their class says a body part in three languages - English, German and Swiss German! Watch a sample of the videos from each class below and see if you can learn a few German words!
