Oregon Battle of the Books
This year, with help from Karen Torry and Level 3 teacher Gretchen, I will be putting together teams of 3rd-5th graders who want to participate in Oregon Battle of the Books. Teams will meet Wednesdays after school (starting November 18th) to study and discuss the required reading. We will hold a school competition in February and the winning team will represent FGCS at the regional competition in March. Interested students can get more information and permission slips from me. We are also looking for parents who want to read and discuss some of the books with students at our weekly meetings, so please let me know if you're interested!
Weekly Review
Last week, we learned more about the art of early Northwest Coast people. We were surprised to read that there are at least six different kinds of totem poles, including something called a Shame Pole! The Plovers then worked with their clans to build totem poles (finally putting the pillars in our classroom to good use!), flags, masks and treasure boxes. We also elected a village chief! Congratulations Evergreen (aka Blue)!
