Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we will go to the Forest Grove Fire Station for a tour and to learn some basic first aid skills! This O&A will provide our students with a deeper understanding of the many functions our fire department performs to keep our community safe. Students will also walk away from this O&A feeling more comfortable in the event they ever need to call 911. Next week, we have an all day Out & About at the Gales Creek Campground to learn and practice outdoor skills, like tent set up, tying knots, building fires, and using emergency signals outdoors.
In Search of Tents for Indoor Use!
We would like to turn our classroom into a campground for the last full week of school (June 4-8)!
What we are looking for:
- Dome style or sun shelters (beach tents) work best
- 2-4 person (bigger tents won't fit!)
- We only need the main tent, no FLY required (sunny skies in the classroom)
I would need it to be brought in on or before Friday, June 1st and we will send the tents back home on Friday, June 8th.
State (SBAC) Testing
This week, Plovers will continue working on the Smarter Balanced ELA (reading/writing) Performance Task. This activity asks students to read 2-3 short articles and respond to a narrative, opinion or informational prompt using evidence from the texts. Next week, we will begin math testing. Please help support your Plover by: encouraging them to do their best, making sure they eat breakfast and bring a snack, and helping them get plenty of sleep. Testing is administered in the computer lab in short sessions, and students have the opportunity to work on the same test over multiple sessions so they can work at their own pace.

Weekly Review
Last week, the Plovers continued their study of geology, earthquakes and erosion. We have been checking the USGS Earthquake Map to see where earthquakes are occurring around the world. As a part of our earthquake unit, students will be thinking of ways that they can help their families be prepared in case of an emergency. On Thursday, your student will be bringing home a paper that will need to be filled out and returned by Monday, May, 21st. On the paper, they will need to write their address, parents' or guardians' phone numbers (possibly another phone number such as a grandparent or neighbor), and a safe meeting spot near their home. I will include some information on what to consider when creating your family's safe meeting spot. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or Maddie at [email protected].
Communication
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Parents and students can e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also leave a voice message on the class phone or set up a time to meet with me before/after school.
