Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we will host the Touching History Mobile Museum (part of the Washington County Museum) and see a presentation about the Oregon Trail. Students will learn:
- Who traveled the emigrant trails and why?
- How did they decide what to take and what to leave behind?
- What factors played a role in who survived and who didn’t?
We are in need of Library Chaperones for April 7th and 28th. We are also in need of breakfast donations for April 4th and 25th. Thanks for your support!
Weekly Review
Before Spring Break, the Plovers got a small taste of our upcoming unit about the Oregon Trail. Students enthusiastically followed along on a U.S. map while I read aloud from a Choose Your Own Adventure book called The Oregon Trail: An Interactive History Adventure by Matt Doeden. The class voted on the choices we should make along the way and there was even a few debates about the best options. They are excited to re-read the book and choose a different path. We will study the Oregon Trail throughout the month of April and then jump into some projects about outdoor adventure and survival!
The Plovers are continuing their hunt for some new vocabulary words! Every week, I will pick 2-3 words from our classroom read alouds. I will try to focus on choosing words that could be used in everyday conversation (so, these will not be content-specific vocabulary words), but require more complex decoding skills or conceptual understanding than traditional high frequency words. The students' job is to look for these words in their own reading or listen for them in conversation. If they find one of our words, they should record the sentence or bring the book with them to morning meeting. Our first 3 words were announcement, distant and admit and our newest words are progress and decision. Try using these words at home this week and see if your Plover notices!
