Upcoming Out and Abouts
We will go to the Geography Bee this week to learn more about the competition and cheer on our class representative - Danielle! Next week, we will get to see Luella in the performance of The Little Mermaid!
Math Notes
This week in Third Grade Math, we will continue to review and build on material covered in the beginning of the year, including measurement, place value, estimation, solving story problems, adding and subtracting with money, and calculating perimeter. Students who are able to demonstrate proficiency in these skills will complete a challenge project or extension activity, and other students will receive additional support and small-group instruction. Our next unit will focus on multiplication and division.
For Homework, Third Graders will complete the Home Connection 11, which provides a review of multi-digit addition and subtraction and more practice solving story problems.
This week we will continue our new unit focusing on fractions and division. Over the course of this (approximately) 6 week unit, your 4th grader will:
· Draw pictures to show fractions
· Write numbers to name picture of fractions
· Identify equivalent fractions
· Identify which of two fractions is greater
· Solve problems involving division with remainders
· Divide 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers
· Solve story problems about fractions and dividing whole numbers
For homework students are required to complete Home Connections 19.

Weekly Review
Last week, we completed the preliminary rounds of the National Geographic Bee in class to determine the Plover class representative. There were 7 rounds of competition and each student answered a question in each round. The questions were about US and World geography, as well as physical geography vocabulary. In some rounds, students receive multiple answers to choose from and in other rounds, the questions were open-ended. Only 4th-8th graders are allowed to participate in the National Bee, so Plovers who are 3rd graders just played along for practice! Next year, they'll have an opportunity to represent our class.
I also began reading the memoir Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges to the class. When she was 6 years old, Ruby Bridges was the first black student at an all-white public school in Louisiana. The students have had many passionate, mature and thoughtful conversations about her story. It has also resonated with our focus on community, citizenship and being a power for good. We will continue to read about the work of Martin Luther King Jr and other heroes who have made a difference in their communities.
