For our Out & About this week, we will visit the Oregon Historical Society in downtown Portland. Our guides will take us on a tour through history using artifacts from Native Americans, early explorers, Oregon trailers, and beyond. In the Oregon Voices exhibit, we will learn more about important people that helped create positive change throughout Oregon's history. Please join us as a chaperone for this trip!

Friendship Brunch (Valentines Day)
We will show appreciation for our classroom community and friendships with a Friendship Brunch on February 12th. There are additional sign-ups on the Community Breakfast VolunteerSpot page for veggies, cheese and crackers. If your Plover would like to bring in cards for their classmates, they MUST bring one for every student. Students can make cards or buy them. Please be modest with candy contributions; Plovers will not be allowed to eat treats at school.

Literature Circles and Book Clubs
All Plovers will join a new book club this week and most groups will be diving into historical fiction novels! The books the students picked are: Balto, Buffalo Before Breakfast, Chicken Squad, Phoebe the Spy, and Steal Away. Students will have time in class to read and write about their book, but some students may choose to read at home and complete their book club assignment as extra homework. I do not want this to be a burden for families, so if your Plover seems worried about completing their assigned reading or writing, please let me know so I can help their book club figure out a more reasonable pace.
Weekly Review
We transitioned back into our study of Oregon history last week by studying the Lewis & Clark expedition and talking about the Native American perspective from our previous unit on Early Northwest Coast People. I read aloud How We Crossed The West by Rosalyn Schanzer and the students could follow along on iPads. Then, we went to Roger's Park to try a Choose Your Own Adventure orienteering course. Students worked in pairs and used a compass to navigate through their own expedition. It was a chilly and rainy day, and many students realized they were not prepared for the weather! We had to come back to school early and talk about wearing the right kind of clothes (warm socks, waterproof coats, boots and gloves) to learn and play outside. It looks like we will be spoiled with sunshine this week, but the rain will surely return and Plovers should be prepared to be outside every Wednesday.
