Literature Circles and Book Clubs
Some students will begin meeting with new book clubs this week. Each book club will agree on a book to read and decide together how many pages to read before their next meeting. All Plovers will have time in class to read and write about their book, but some students may choose to read at home and complete their book club assignment as extra homework. I do not want this to be an extra burden for families, so if you Plover seems worried about completing their assigned reading or writing, please let me know so I can help their book club figure out a more reasonable pace. Not all students will join a book club this week, but my hope is for everyone to try it out some time this month!
Friendship Day Brunch
We will show appreciation for our classroom community and friendships with a Friendship Day Brunch on February 13th. There are additional sign-ups on the Community Breakfast VolunteerSpot page for veggies, cheese and crackers. If your Plover would like to bring in cards for their classmates, they MUST bring one for every student. Students can make cards or buy them. Please be modest with candy contributions; Plovers will not be allowed to eat treats at school.

Upcoming Out and Abouts
We will use our Out & About time this week for more Science Labs! Some students still have some work to do on their Take Apart Day projects and posters from last week. They will also work on their circuitry quiz boards, which will be on display next week during Celebrations of Learning.

Math Notes
Third grade mathematicians solved some tricky area and perimeter problems last week in the Backyard Garden and the classroom. Ask your Plover or Puffin if they can figure out the perimeter of your foot (they'll need some string or ribbon and a ruler)! This week we'll move into studying triangles, quadrilaterals and angles. You can talk about angles with your student by noticing when you making turns while walking around the house, neighborhood or grocery store. Many of the turns you make will be 90 degree turns (right angles), like the intersection of two streets.
Last week in Fourth Grade math we focused on completing a couple end-of-semester assessments and practiced our multiplication skills. This week we will focus on both review and new concepts. Specifically, we will focus on multi-digit addition/subtraction, multiplication fact fluency, and continue our work with division. Your fourth grade mathematician would also benefit from practicing their facts at home on a regular basis. This could be with flashcards, IXL, oral quizzes, School House Rocks songs, multiplication games, etc. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
4th Grade NAEP Testing
