Upcoming Out and Abouts
For this week's Out and About, we will join Lewis and Clark on their exploration by navigating a choose-your-own-adventure style orienteering course. Students will have to successfully follow compass directions to make it across the continent to Oregon! Our adventure will take place at Roger's Park. Next week, we will go to Portland to visit the Oregon Historical Society and we will need 2 chaperones to join us on this all day trip!
Volunteer Opportunities
Academic Choice Support - The marble machine group needs 1 more parent, hopefully with a power drill, to help with their project on Thursday, Feb 4th.
Breakfast Donations - Fruit and cereal/bagels needed for this week.
Out & About Chaperone - 2 chaperones for Oregon Historical Society on Feb 10th.
Welcome Carl!
I am so excited to welcome Carl Gibson to the Plover community! He will be student teaching with us for the next 9 weeks. We will be working together closely and sharing responsibilities in the classroom. He has a fun and informative unit about the Oregon Trail that he'll begin teaching soon! The Plovers have gotten to know Carl on the Tuesdays and Thursdays he has observing in the classroom and we are looking forward to having him with us on a daily basis. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me or Carl at [email protected].
Literature Circles and Book Clubs
All Plovers will participate in a Lewis & Clark book club this week and then begin meeting independently next week about a book of their choice. Students will have time in class to read and write about their book, but some students may choose to read at home and complete their book club assignment as extra homework. I do not want this to be an extra burden for families, so if your Plover seems worried about completing their assigned reading or writing, please let me know so I can help their book club figure out a more reasonable pace.
Weekly Review
Congratulations to Che - our Plover class representative for the FGCS GeoBee! Over the past several weeks, Plovers participated in the preliminary rounds of the National Geographic Bee. There are 7 rounds of competition and each student individually answers a question in every round. The questions are about US and World geography. In some rounds, students receive multiple answers to choose from and in other rounds, the questions are open-ended. For more information, please visit: www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee. Only 4th-8th graders are allowed to participate in the National Bee, so Plovers who are 3rd graders just play along for practice! Next year, they'll have an opportunity to represent our class. Another congratulations to Lowell, who is only a 3rd grader but correctly answered 6 out of 7 questions!
Last week, we started the The Great Kindness Challenge and we will continue it next week (Feb 8 - 12). The Great Kindness Challenge is dedicated to creating a culture of kindness on campuses nationwide. Last week, we surprised the Puffins with Love Bugs and made a food-themed "Thank You" poster for Theresa, our extraordinary school lunch chef! Next week, the Plovers will have time to plan and perform more kind deeds for the school community. You can also encourage your child to practice extra kindness at home and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!
Communication
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Parents and students can e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also leave a voice message on the class phone or come into the classroom before/after school.
