Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we will take a tour of the Forest Grove Goodwill store and purchase winter clothes to donate to Foster Closet with our proceeds from the Pet Rock Real Estate Company. Chaperones are needed and we will be walking from FGCS to Goodwill. Next week, we will deliver clothes, books and more to Foster Closet on Thursday, December 18th!

Math Notes
In third grade math, we finished our work with surveys and graphs and moved into our third unit called "Collections and Travel Stories." In this unit, third grade mathematicians will practice and refine addition and subtraction strategies with 3-digit numbers. We will build a class collection to learn about the size of the number 1,000 and identify how many groups of 10 are in a 3-digit number. The class decided they wanted to try to collect 1,000 rocks! Students may bring in rocks to add to the collection any day this week (small rocks or pebbles appreciated!). We are also practicing telling time and reading a thermometer. You can help your student practice telling time by asking questions such as, "We are going to have dinner in 45 minutes, what time will it be then?"
This week in Fourth Grade Math, we will continue our third unit from Investigations called Multiple Towers and Division Stories. During this unit, students will build on the work they did in our first unit Factors, Multiples, and Arrays. Students will be solving multiplication problems with 2-digit numbers, division story problems, and problems about factors, multiples and other number relationships. In math class, students will spend time discussion problems in depth and are asked to share their reasoning and solutions. It is most important that 4th grade mathematicians accurately and efficiently solve math problems in ways that make sense to them. At home, encourage your student to explain his/her math thinking to you.
Weekly Review
The Pet Rock Real Estate Company had a wonderful grand opening during Winter Social last week! We took more than 35 orders for pet rock houses, cars and accessories and earned more than $200 for Foster Closet! Thank you to all the families who were able to support and encourage this project! Here are some reflections that the Plovers shared during Community Breakfast-
McKenzie: I felt proud that people came in and looked at our hard work.
Maya: I’m proud of the people who made the houses and the things that went on display because people wanted them so much and 35 people paid money for the houses!
Natalie: I thought we would make our goal, but we doubled our goal!
Tessa: I’m happy that everyone did their best painting the house and making them look nice. I feel real happy that people made them look nice.
Bailey: I thought we could earn $20 or more. Maybe $50-60, but not more that $150!
Nasya: I hope the money will go to people who need help, like getting clothes.
Jacob: I think we could buy a lot of things. We could buy 3 outfits, or maybe 4-5 from Goodwill. Then, four kids could have a new outfit to wear to school. I like getting new clothes and I think that would pretty exciting.
Francis: I think people who ordered the houses will be excited and it will be pretty cool to know another kid made that - it wasn’t made by a machine.
Nasya: I think once we deliver them, people will feel happy because they’ll know we built them and it took a lot of work.
Jacob: You get to know that you made a house for someone and you’re going to make their day better. Well, two days better because of Foster Closet, too.
Ulee: They’re going to feel like you put hard work into it and you’re going to be so happy that they like it.
Bailey: My joy will be to walk up and give them the house and see their face.
Aiello: I will feel very happy that they wanted to help us get some money for Foster Closet and Goodwill.
Jamie: Sometimes I feel happy to see someone smile.
Tessa: I think when someone gets their house, they’ll think, “Wow, I can make one too,” and they can pass it on.
How Families Still Can Help:
1. Drop off donations of NEW children's socks, hats or gloves for Foster Closet before Dec 15th (bring donations to the Plover Nest before or after school).
2. Join the Plovers on our Out & Abouts to Goodwill or Foster Closet!
