Oregon Battle of the Books
This year, with help from Karen Torry and Level 3 teacher Gretchen, I will be putting together teams of 3rd-5th graders who want to participate in Oregon Battle of the Books. Teams will meet Wednesdays after school (starting November 18th) to study and discuss the required reading. We will hold a school competition in February and the winning team will represent FGCS at the regional competition in March. Interested students can get more information and permission slips from me. We are also looking for parents who want to read and discuss some of the books with students at our weekly meetings, so please let me know if you're interested!
Classroom Support
This year, we have a student teacher from Pacific University joining our classroom! Carl has been observing and helping in our classroom this fall, and he will take over more teaching responsibilities in February and March. Below is a short note from Carl!
Hello Plover Families! My name is Carl Gibson and I am currently a student at Pacific University working on my Master's Degree in Teaching. I am so excited to have joined the Forest Grove Community School to work and learn with Laura and your children. Let me tell you a little about myself!
I was born and raised in Hawaii on the beautiful island of Oahu. I lived there until I moved to Oregon in 2009 to attend Willamette University, where I majored in Spanish and Religious Studies. I have always been involved in educational work since high school, and I have many educators in my family. My mother was a 6th grade teacher for over 30 years in Hawaii, and my aunt recently retired from teaching 3rd grade at Harvey Clarke Elementary right here in Forest Grove. I have worked as a tutor and an after-school program instructor in several elementary and high school classrooms.
In my free time I enjoy being outdoors. I love hiking, backpacking, biking, and traveling! During the winter I try to get up to Mt. Hood as much as possible even though I am not very good at skiing or snowboarding (I blame Hawaii), but I try! I am also a big fan of live music, fish, and sports - Go Blazers & Timbers! I am looking forward to a great year in the Plovers' classroom, and hopefully I will get to meet some of you soon. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about me or the MAT program at Pacific University.
Best,
Carl Gibson

Weekly Review
Last week, the Plovers worked diligently to finish their pumpkins and fairy tale adaptations before Halloween! Each student meet with an editor to fix up their rough drafts and then carefully wrote their final copy on a piece of stationary. Students will write one final fairy tale or folk tale before we wrap up this writing unit. We also had an Out & About last week to Tillamook Forest to learn more about Oregon's history and the people who first lived here. Students performed skits about important historical events and enjoyed a short, and only slightly wet, nature walk. And if that wasn't enough, the Plovers also returned to the dances they created with Robyn from Oregon Ballet Theatre and practiced for this week's All School Meeting Presentation! If you would like to see the Plovers's dances and presentation, please join us at the school district office (Central School) this Friday at 9:45.
Communication
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Parents and students can e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also leave a voice message on the class phone or come into the classroom before/after school.
