Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Wednesday, we will go on a tour of the Metro Central Transfer Station and the Hazardous Waste Facility in Portland to begin our study of garbage! Have some batteries to dispose of? Send them with your student on Wednesday and we will take them with us!
We will be gone almost all day (8:50 - 2:00) and students who ordered a school lunch for Wednesday will receive a sack lunch. For this Out & About, it is important that students dress appropriately for the weather because we will be outside most of the day. Everyone MUST wear closed toed shoes or boots for the tour of the hazardous waste facility!
Volunteer Opportunities
Out & About Chaperones are needed for our tour of the Hillsboro Landfill next Wednesday, October 8th. We will leave the school at 11:30 and return by 2:15. Chaperones should plan to ride the school bus (no siblings, please).
Math Notes
Last week in Third Grade Math, we continued our unit on addition, subtraction and place value. In this unit, students will practice solving addition and subtraction problems involving 2-digit and small 3-digit numbers. During class, students spend time discussing problems and sharing their reasoning and solutions. By doing this, students are able to see that there are many different strategies for solving a problem; students should choose a method that makes sense to them and is also efficient and accurate. Third graders will use math notebooks in class to record their work and ideas before sharing with the class. Your Puffin or Plover may want to keep a math notebook by the computer or tablet at home for working on IXL homework! They may also use a 100s chart or open number line, as needed, to help with addition and subtraction homework problems.
Last week in Fourth Grade Math, we began our first unit using Investigations titled “Factors, Multiples and Arrays.” In this unit, students review the multiplication combinations they know, identify the ones they need to work on, and develop strategies for learning them. They solve problems by using arrays. This week we will also focus in solving problems about factors of a number and number relationships, such as: If 25 is a factor of 100, will 25 also be a factor of 300? How do you know? Throughout this unit, we will work on the following goals:
- Find the product of any multiplication combination up to 12x12
- Use arrays, pictures, story contexts to represent multiplication situations
- Find the factors of 2-digit numbers
Weekly Review
Last week, we had our first Mystery Readers. Mystery Readers send in 5 clues about themselves and I reveal the clues to the class throughout the day. Students make guesses about the identity of the mystery reader and, as a result, they get to learn about what their families have in common. Last week, we learned lots of people in our classroom know people who have traveled to other continents! At the end of the day, the Mystery Reader appears in the Plover Nest and reads a book to the class! We got to hear The Three Questions by Jon J Muth read by Vanessa Gray and Thanks a LOT, Emily Post! by Jennifer Larue Huget and Alexandra Boiger read by Jenn Crowell. THANK YOU Mystery Readers! If you would like to share a book with the Plovers, you can sign up to be a Mystery Reader on our VolunteerSpot page.
We had a great visit to the Forest Grove Library last week! Students reviewed proper library etiquette and checked out books. I am encouraging students to bring their own library cards this year, or you can give me a photocopy of their card to keep at school. If you would like to get a library card for your family or Plover, please visit the library (you must register in person). I will check out books for students who do not have a library card, but these books must stay in the classroom. We will visit the library approximately every three weeks and our next visit will be on Monday, October 13th.
