Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Wednesday, we will visit the garden to begin working on our science notebooks and Native Americans unit. Students should dress appropriately for the (possibly rainy) weather and bring a water bottle. Next Wednesday, we will walk to Roger's Park for lunch and science activities focused on weather. Students who ordered a school lunch will get a sack lunch that contains a sandwich, fresh fruit, fresh vegetable and milk.
Volunteer Opportunities
1. Breakfast Donations - The Plovers will enjoy a breakfast together every Friday morning. You can sign up now to help provide snacks. There are 2 spots available each week, so one family can donate cereal (or bagels, muffins, granola bars, etc) and another family can supply fresh fruit. We would like to avoid sugary treats and candy.
2. Out & About Chaperones - Sign up to join the Plovers on an Out & About! On our SignUp page, you'll be able to find out more about each Out & About, including locations and times. You can sign up now to join us at the Backyard Garden on September 18th or Roger's Park on September 25th!
3. Library Chaperones - The Plovers will visit the Forest Grove Public Library every 3 weeks on Monday afternoons. The library requires classes to have additional adult supervision. Chaperones will walk with the class from FGCS to the library, help students locate and check out books using the self scanner, and accompany pairs of students to the restrooms and water fountain.
Weekly Review
Last week, we focused on building community and teamwork skills through engineering challenges! Plovers worked in small groups to help Fred D. Worm out of some tricky situations. First, students created a parachute that could take Fred down to the ground slowly when dropped from the top of a mountain (aka the top of the stairs). Next, students worked together to put a life preserver on Fred (without using their hands) so he wouldn’t drown while whitewater rafting. Then, groups had to create the longest bridge possible for Fred out of just one piece of construction paper! We talked as a class about ways to encourage and support your partner and strategies for calming down when you feel frustrated.
The Plovers learned about classroom jobs last week and started helping with some tasks around the classroom. On Friday, we filled out a job application together and students took their application home to complete. I will assign jobs next week. Employees will keep their jobs for about 8 weeks, and then they will have the opportunity to apply for a new job. Employees receive a check from the payroll department every other week and later in the year they will be able to buy exciting rewards with their classroom currency (like dance parties, show-and-tell and beanie baby sleepovers). Students will need to keep track of their earnings and they will also pay rent. They can earn bonuses for completing extra assignments or stewardship jobs or receive fines for not taking care of classroom resources or personal belongings.
Communication
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Parents and students can e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also leave a voice message on the class phone or set up a time to meet with me before/after school.
