Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Wednesday, we will walk to Tom McCall Forest for team-building activities and nature journaling. Next Wednesday, we will work on a neighborhood scavenger hunt and mapping activity from 10:30 - 11:30. We need chaperones to help lead small groups for the scavenger hunt activity.
Volunteer Opportunities
Out & About Chaperones are still needed on Sept 17 from 12:30 - 3:00 for Tom McCall Forest and Sept 24 from 10:30 - 11:30 for a neighborhood scavenger hunt and mapping activity. Library Chaperones are needed on Sept 22 from 1:45 - 3:00.
Under new Forest Grove School District policy, criminal background checks will be required for all volunteers starting with the 2014-15 school year. This includes, but is not limited to, Out & About chaperones and classroom volunteers. Please visit the Volunteer page for more information.
Other ongoing volunteer opportunities:
Breakfast Donations - The Plovers will enjoy a breakfast together every Friday morning. You can sign up now to help provide snacks. There are 2 spots available each week, so one family can donate cereal (or bagels, muffins, granola bars, etc) and another family can supply fresh fruit. We would like to avoid sugary treats and candy.
Mystery Readers - Parents, relatives and other Plover friends are invited to surprise the class by being a Mystery Reader in our classroom this year. Mystery Readers send in 5 clues about themselves, but their true identities are not revealed until they arrive! Readers are asked to bring a picture book to read out loud to the class. I have 2 spots available each week for mystery readers, but I can add more if those times do not work with your schedule. Please email me to schedule an additional time.
Scholastic Book Orders
At Family Visits, you hopefully received information about Scholastic Reading Clubs. You can view this month's selections and submit your order online at https://orders.scholastic.com/L79X9. When you place your order online, you'll help earn FREE books for our class! September orders are due Monday, September 29th. The books typically arrive about 10 days after I submit the class orders.
Weekly Review
Last Wednesday, we enjoyed a sunny afternoon in the Backyard Garden (our school's garden on the corner of 19th and Main). It was a fun trip to practice Out & About behaviors. Students helped Erin with the garden beds and took care of A LOT of watering. We also had time to explore, play games, prepare a snack and launch paper rockets!
We are spending the first weeks of school getting to know each other and learning about classroom routines. I can already tell that we have a community that LOVES to read! Students have started to create lists of books they hope to read this year and I've had many requests for more time to read! I've read several books by Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri aloud to the class, including Dragons Love Tacos, Big Bad Bubble, Those Darn Squirrels and Those Darn Squirrels Fly South. The students have enjoyed looking for similarities between these funny and imaginative stories. If you have a great picture book that you'd like to share with the class, please sign up to be a mystery reader!
Communication
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Parents and students can e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also leave a voice message on the class phone, come into the classroom before or after school, or call me before 8PM at home
