Weekly Review - Written by The Plovers
Last week, we went to Fanno Creek in Tigard to learn about the problem of litter and how it affects rivers. We picked up trash that other people left behind along the creek. We found cigarettes, wrappers, bottles, plastic bags, cans, building materials, paper coffee cups, candy and caps. We sorted the garbage and Erin helped us recycle as much as we could. Then, we had lunch and went on a hike. We got to see animal furs, like a cougar and beaver pelt, and a park. Some Plovers were afraid of poison ivy and oak on the hike, but our guide told us not to worry! On the way back to the bus, we visited a special tree with squishy bark.
When we got back to school, we saw that litter had appeared all over our Plover Town mural! One of the business owners, Cole from the Library, thinks the litter will stop people from shopping at the Main Street Business Community. He said the litter was coming from kids and teenagers, who were also being noisy and disrespectful. We need to have a meeting of the business owners to decide what to do about the problem of litter. But first, we did some research about creative ways cities have tried to decrease litter. We saw things like a garbage can that makes sounds effects, like the sound of Wylie Coyote falling off a cliff, when you toss in some trash. We saw a special recycling container for cigarette butts that are collected by Terracycle; they can recycle the plastic in the filter to make benches! Here's a link to some other cool videos we watched: Solving Problems About Litter
