Weekly Review
We began Readers Theater last week to help build fluency and read with expression. The students chose their parts and have been practicing in small groups. During Readers Theater, students read from a script and tell the story using only their voices. There are no props or costumes. Some students may bring their scripts home to practice this week. All of the stories are parodies of popular fairy tales (The Popsicle Boy based on The Gingerbread Man, Spiderella based on Cinderella, The Three Little Elephants based on The Three Little Pigs, and Slurping Beauty based on Sleeping Beauty). We will make podcasts of each performance and I will post them on the website.
Students have been setting personal goals for Reading, Writing, Math, Citizenship and Stewardship. They will share their goals with you at conferences this week. We first brainstormed different types of goals people might have and discussed why we set goals. We talked about how to measure a goal and how to set a goal that is specific and attainable. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on their goals weekly and readjust their goals as needed. This is hard work for third and fourth graders and I am excited to share students' work with you at conferences!
Math Notes
In Third Grade Math, we will continue our work with place value and multi-digit computation. Students will learn problem-solving strategies, such as rounding and estimating before calculating, to help them work with larger numbers and justify their calculations. Students will also begin adding and subtracting with money this week. There is no math homework.
This week in Fourth Grade Math, we will finish our first unit in math and start our second unit. This new unit will focus on place value and multiplication with larger numbers. We will continue our use of the area model for multiplication as well as expand our multiplication strategies. We will also continue our fluency and automaticity with 0-12 multiplication facts. Due to the short week, there will be no math homework.
