Teresa would like some help in art next week as the Plovers work on a paper making project! If you are available either Monday or Wednesday at 10:30 - 11:30, please sign up on the VolunteerSpot page or email me. All other spaces are filled for this month, but you can sign up now for November mystery reader, library chaperone or breakfast donation. Thank you!
Weekly Review
We started our pumpkin book projects last week with a trip to the library. Students re-discovered favorite picture books and stories, and then they chose a character to represent on a pumpkin. Each Plover completed a "blueprint" of their pumpkin and created a supply list. Then, they re-read their books, looking closely at character traits. We talked about inferences and how a good author will leave clues that allow the reader to infer character traits based on things the characters do and say. Infer and Support with Evidence is our newest reading strategy and students will get lots of practice as they continue to work on their pumpkin book projects this week! Pumpkins, books, and students' writing will be on display next Thursday, October 31 from 2:45 - 3:20.
For our "In and About" last week, we had a guest teacher from the Washington County Museum visit to teach us about the indigenous people of the Tualatin Valley. She shared a short presentation about the lives of the Atfalati (a branch of the Kalapuya tribe) and answered questions. Then, students rotated between five different stations to touch and use a variety of artifacts and replicas. Many students were excited to feel the assortment of animals furs, as well as stone tools and handwoven baskets!
