Oregon Battle of the Books
This year, with help from Karen Torry and Level 3 teacher Gretchen, I will be putting together teams of 3rd-5th graders who want to participate in Oregon Battle of the Books. Teams will meet Wednesdays after school (starting November 18th) to study and discuss the required reading. We will hold a school competition in February and the winning team will represent FGCS at the regional competition in March. Interested students can get more information and permission slips from me. We are also looking for parents who want to read and discuss some of the books with students at our weekly meetings, so please let me know if you're interested!
Weekly Review
Last week, the Plovers presented about our project work with story telling and dance at the all school meeting. Every student participated in a fairy tale dance that we recorded and played at the meeting. You can watch this video and leave a comment on the student blog page. Many students also wanted to participate in other ways - either speaking about our work in class, performing either a tarantella or Nutcracker routine, or playing percussion instruments for the dancers! Everybody worked hard all week learning their lines, practicing their dance routines and learning the music. Great work Plovers! Our next turn to present at all school meeting will happen in March.
We are close to finishing our novel read aloud: Where The Mountain Meets The Moon by Grace Lin. At home, your Plover may be interested in reading or listening to the prequel to this story, called Starry River of the Sky. There are also some fun activities and videos on the author's webpage. Next, we will read more Native American folk tales and legends and perform another round of readers theater!
