Expectations for Opinion Paragraph of the Week:
- Topic sentence shares the author's point of view and is a complete sentence.
- Give at least 3 different reasons to support the opinion.
- Sentences have correct capitalization and punctuation.
- Neat handwriting and proper spacing between words.
Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Wednesday, we will go to Portland to visit a mini golf business and consider if we could make our own mini golf course out of recycled materials. Students who ordered a school lunch will get a sack lunch that contains a sandwich, fresh fruit, fresh vegetable and milk. Next Wednesday, we will do some more work with the compost in the Backyard Garden.

Weekly Review
Last week, we had a guest teacher from OMSI lead some hands-on activities about energy and electricity. From driving cars to turning on lights, humans are constantly using energy, yet our traditional sources of energy, coal and oil, are only estimated to last a few hundred more years. Reducing our energy consumption is a great start. Driving less, using more efficient light bulbs and appliances, and remembering to turn things off will reduce our need for energy, but that isn’t enough. We’ll always need some amount of energy, so we need to find new sources of energy that don’t rely on nonrenewable sources—those that will run out.
The Plovers were able to explore stations representing a variety of different energy options available to our country, including wind energy, solar energy, and several others. At the stations, they were able to explore questions like:
- How does a wind turbine generate electricity?
- Can we use solar panels in Oregon?
- What makes energy renewable?
