Upcoming In and Abouts
This week, we will begin our focus on consumerism and recycling. A presenter from Metro will come to lead a project about packaging and ways to decrease waste. Next week, we will take a tour of Goodwill and learn how they help consumers reduce, reuse and recycle!
Weekly Review
Our big focus last week was on our Pumpkin Book Projects. Students worked very hard to finish their pumpkin characters and to type up their character descriptions. They also worked together to arrange and decorate the classroom for our presentation. We visited the computer lab during our Out and About time so students could publish their work. Some students also published a creative writing project about a Haunted House For Sale! Their newspaper articles and illustrations are in the hallway. It was a lot of fun to see the pumpkin book projects and to watch the Plovers share their creations with other classes and visitors!
Students spent some more time thinking about their reading, writing, math, citizenship and stewardship goals. Each child decided on the first steps required to reach their goals and began working on individual projects and practice work. A copy of students' goals went home in their binder today. Some students will have additional work for at-home practice. Please let me know if you have any questions about the work coming home. If you would like extra writing or math practice for your student, or need good-fit books for your student to read at home, please email me any time.
Math Notes
Third Grade mathematicians will focus on money and place-value this week. Students will use money value pieces (pretend coins) and base 10 manipulatives to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction problems. We will also practice the standard algorithms for adding and subtracting two-digit numbers.
For homework, students need to complete the Using Coins worksheet. If support is needed, parents can provide students with actual coins to work with.
This week in Fourth Grade Math, we will focus heavily on using a variety of multiplication strategies, including: algorithm, array model, and the expanded form. This will help us continue to develop our multi-digit multiplication skills. We will also continue our fluency and automaticity with 0-12 multiplication facts; and begin our goal work this week.
For homework this week students are required to complete Home Connections 13 – Multiplying by 10. Questions/Comments/Concerns, please contact Becky at [email protected]
Communication
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Parents and students can e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also leave a voice message on the class phone, come into the classroom before or after school, or call me before 8PM at home.
