Upcoming Out and Abouts
We will use our Out & About time this month for Science Labs! Level 2 students will be exploring geology, earthquakes and engineering. This week, we will focus on the question: how can rocks tell a story about the past? Students will learn how paleontologists and geologists learn from the past by studying clues like fossils and stratigraphy (layers of rock). Students may bring in small toys, shells or other natural objects to create their own fossil.
Volunteer Opportunities
Breakfast Donations - Fruit and cereal/bagels needed for this week.
Library Chaperones - 2 chaperones needed for our next library trip (12/7).
Scholastic Book Orders
December book orders are due this Wednesday, December 2nd. Books will arrive before Winter Break. If you plan to give books as a gift and do not want your student to see them, I can place your order in a paper bag or set them aside for you to pick up. Please send me an email if you do not want your child to see the order. Visit our class book club page to see this month's selection, including the Holiday Gift collection.
Oregon Battle of the Books
I've created a new page on the Plover Portal for students that are participating in OBOB. There is a link to team rosters and reading assignments. Please email me if you'd like to help lead a book discussion during one of our Wednesday after school meetings.
Weekly Review
Before Thanksgiving Break, a trader visited the students' Native American village. Families decided to trade their artwork, flags, masks and dishes for coins and gems. Many characters were excited to make trades with Captain Morgan and some even happily gave him special gifts from their homes! But after he left, the class reflected on how the trader treated the villagers and how the trading experience could affect the community. We also learned that traders often brought diseases that killed up to 50% of the native population. Students then worked independently to write a short story about the event from their character's perspective.
As we begin our study of earthquakes this week, we will regularly check the USGS map to see real-time earthquake data from around the world. Many students were interested in taking a closer look at the map on their own, so here is the link: USGS 1-DAY Magnitude 2.5+
