Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Wednesday, we will go to Portland to tour two amazing local organization that help the community with repurposed resources. The Rebuilding Center sells second-hand construction supplies, from lumber to chandeliers, while SCRAP sells used art supplies to inspire creative reuse. Both organizations are non-profits that support community projects. We will be taking a tour and also scouting for supplies to start our classroom business. We will eat lunch outside, so send your Plovers dressed for cold weather! Students who ordered a school lunch will get a sack lunch that contains a sandwich, fresh fruit, fresh vegetable and milk. Please consider joining us from 9:30 - 2:15 as a chaperone!

Stephanie's News From Art Room
Students will be creating holiday cards in art class to accompany donations to the Forest Grove Senior Center. You can find a list of needed items and donate a gift at Bi-Mart. There will be a holiday gift wrapping party on December 19th from 9am - 10:30am. They would like volunteers to come wrap the gifts they collect. If you have any questions about ways to volunteer in this project or with seniors, you can contact Joni at 503-530-1527. Annually they collect collect 500 gifts for seniors in need, that is a lot of wrapping!
Weekly Review
Last week, the Plovers continued learning about electricity through hands-on experiments, as well as nonfiction reading. The students worked in small groups to read one of the following informational books: Using Electricity, Making A Circuit, Conductors and Insulators or Using Batteries. Then, they used a screencasting app on the iPads, called Explain Everything, to make a short video about what they learned from their reading. Each video had to include a diagram, 3 scientific terms and a definition. I'll post their completed explanations as soon as they are all completed and uploaded!
The Plovers still have many questions about electricity, such as:
- Why is there electricity?
- How many different ways can you see or get electricity?
- Can water help electricity run?
- Besides electrons, what else is electricity made of?
- What happens to the electrons after they are used?
Next month, we will continue our study of electricity with a Toy Take Apart Day on December 14th! Students will work in small groups to safely dismantle and learn about the "guts" of their toys. We will need parents to help with disassembly, as well as donations of old/broken mechanical toys (stuffies with batteries or switches, dancing Santas, remote-control cars, etc). Tools Needed: All sizes of standard and Phillips head screwdrivers, pliers and wire cutters. Please label tools with your student's name so they can be returned.
