Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we will go to the Backyard Garden. Chaperones are still needed for our final Out & About to Fernhill Wetlands on June 5th!
Celebrations of Learning and Book Swap!
On Thursday, the Plovers and Puffins will host an interactive "Book Tasting!" This event is an opportunity for Level 2 students to show off their favorite books, and for family and friends to sample different genres, authors, topics, and book series. We hope to help get students and families excited for summer reading!
Visitors will also have an opportunity to participate in a “Book Swap” in the Level 2 hallway. If you have books that you would like to donate to the book swap, please have your Plover bring them in during school on Wednesday May 29th or Thursday May 30th. This will help us get set up before Celebrations of Learning. Books should be in good condition and can be for younger or older readers (K-8). To help keep this event manageable, please limit your donations to no more than 5 books per student.
Bridging Ceremony
This event honors our 'bridging' students (2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th graders) who are moving up to the next level at FGCS or moving on to high school. Parents and other family members of bridging students are encouraged to attend. Doors will open for the event at 12:30 p.m. and the event will start at 1 p.m. Allow time to park your car on streets nearby and make your way to Taylor-Meade. Click here for a map of the Pacific University campus.
Parents: You may take students home immediately after the ceremony, but please make sure you check out directly with teachers so we can keep track of everyone. Students who return to campus after Bridging will be dismissed at 3:20.
Volunteer Opportunities
Community Breakfast - Cereal/bagels and fruit needed this Friday and next Friday.
Out & About Chaperones - Needed 6/5 (Fernhill Wetlands).
State (SBAC) Testing
Most students completed their math testing last week. This week, Plovers will complete the Smarter Balanced ELA (reading/writing) Performance Task. This activity asks students to read 2-3 short articles and respond to a narrative, opinion or informational prompt using evidence from the texts. Our testing times are in the afternoon (2:00 - 3:00), so please make sure your student has an extra snack that they can eat after recess.
Weekly Review
The Plovers worked hard to finish their informational writing last week. For this project, students researched an Oregon animal using library books and websites. They wrote several chapters about their animal's diet, lifecycle, and habitat. Their books also had to include nonfiction text features, such as a table of contents, glossary, labeled diagrams and fact boxes. You can see a sample of their writing and their animals masks in the hallway at Celebrations of Learning!
For our Out & About last week, Level 2 traveled back to Cannon Beach! First, we met with educators from the Haystack Rock Awareness Program to learn about tide pools and birds. Then, students worked in groups groups to complete the Beach Olympics, which included a whale sonar challenge, beach clean up and sand sculpture competition. Check out the photos below for more highlights from our beach day!
