Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we have an all day Out & About at the Gales Creek Campground to learn and practice outdoor skills, like tent set up, tying knots, building fires, and using emergency signals outdoors. We will continue to practice our outdoor skills next week on the B Street Trail!
In Search of Tents for Indoor Use!
We would like to turn our classroom into a campground for the last full week of school (June 4-8)!
What we are looking for:
- Dome style or sun shelters (beach tents) work best
- 2-4 person (bigger tents won't fit!)
- We only need the main tent, no FLY required (sunny skies in the classroom)
I would need it to be brought in on or before Friday, June 1st and we will send the tents back home on Friday, June 8th.

Second Step Child Protection Unit
As you may know, FGCS uses a social-emotional curriculum called Second Step to teach students important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
To help make our school even more safe and supportive, we are also going to use the Second Step Child Protection Unit. In these lessons, students will learn three types of skills:
- Personal Safety. Students will learn important safety rules, such as safety with guns, sharp tools, and fire, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.
- Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
- Assertiveness. These lessons will also give students a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
Weekly Review
Last week, the Plovers learned about ways they can stay safe during an emergency. We had an earthquake drill, and the Plovers learned about first aid and hands-only CPR at the fire station. Having a family meeting spot and knowing their address and phone number are some of the other skills they talked about. If you haven't already done so, please fill out and return the safety plan your student brought home last week.
All Plovers complete the reading and writing portions of their state testing last week. This week, they will begin the Smarter Balanced math testing. Please help support your Plover by: encouraging them to do their best, making sure they eat breakfast and bring a snack, and helping them get plenty of sleep. Testing is administered in the computer lab in short sessions, and students have the opportunity to work on the same test over multiple sessions so they can work at their own pace. We are getting close to the end of testing!
