Also, Out and About Chaperones are still needed on Thursday, June 5th when we join the Puffins for a day of canoeing and other outdoor adventures at Hagg Lake! Please check out VolunteerSpot for more chaperone information and sign up if you're able to accompany us!
Words Words Words!
The students' job is to look for these words in their reading or listen for them in conversation. If they find one of our words, they should record the sentence or bring the book with them to Morning Meeting. Try using these words at home and see if your Plover notices!

2. Distant
3. Admit
4. Progress
5. Decision
6. Council

Math Notes
Last week in Third Grade Math, students completed the OAKS. Now, we will begin our last project, which is based on the context of a chocolate shop! This unit will extend students' work with multiplication and division and introduce the open array model.
Last week in Fourth Grade Math, the majority of students completed the OAKS math assessment. If you are interested in knowing your 4th graders math score, please send me an email ([email protected]). We also began a new project called Dream House. In the Dream House project, students are asked to design their dream house to certain specifications (one-story, at least 5 rooms, closets, etc). Once their dream house final draft designs are completed, students will analyze their house using area and perimeter skills; as well as calculate average room size and graph their data.
Weekly Review
Last week, the Plovers learned a lot about staying safe during emergencies during our visit to the Forest Grove Fire Station and through a workshop with the American Red Cross. Today, your student will bring home a workbook and pillowcase from the workshop. Please ask your Plover to share their pillowcase with you and tell you what they learned about emergency supplies. Together, you should review the workbook and complete some of the information on pages 6 - 10. I especially encourage all students to memorize their address and phone number(s), if they haven't already. The workbook does not need to be returned to school. There is no reading response letter due this week so you can instead focus on creating or reviewing your family's emergency plans. Students may also read and complete the activities about natural disasters on pages 14 - 25.
We reviewed our classroom emergency plans and the Plovers practiced what to do if they could not find their teacher during an emergency, like a fire or an earthquake. The students quickly organized themselves outside in a safe location and counted to see if anyone was missing. When they realized they only had 21 people instead of the usual 25, they struggled to figure out who wasn't accounted for. Once we were safely reunited inside, we refined our plans and designated students to carry attendance sheets with them in case of an emergency. The attendance sheets are conveniently hanging by each door and tucked inside the first aid kit. Now, they will be able to report directly to the first responders if I am separated from the class in a real emergency!
