Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we will have a guess presenter teach about the Oregon Bottle Bill and recycling. Next week, we will visit a LEED-certified building at Pacific University.
Math Notes
This week in Third Grade math, we will move into a study of fractions. We are not done with multiplication just yet - we will revisit it later in the year and at that time students will be expected to learn their multiplication facts to 10. This unit on fractions will concentrate on reading, writing and comparing simple fractions. Students will represent factions on a number line as well as with other visual models. This unit will also touch on decimals, money and probability. For more information about grade level expectations, please see the attached Unit Six Parent Handout.
For homework, students will complete the "Pizza Problems" worksheet.
This week will be a transition for the Fourth Grade Math students. We will (1) finish our post assessment from Unit 3, (2) begin Unit 6 on fractions and decimals, and (3) prepare for our presentation at Friday’s All School Meeting. Over the course of Unit 6, your Fourth Grade Puffin or Plover will:
- Identify fractions and decimals that are equal to each other
- Compare decimals numbers and fractions
- Add and subtract decimal numbers using a variety of strategies

Weekly Review
Last Friday was Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Suess's birthday. Students got cozy in their pajamas, cuddled with stuffed friends and spent the day reading! We also finished our read aloud book, The Magical Ms. Plum by Bonny Becker, and had two mystery readers share their favorite stories with us. Teresa read a cool shadow story with the lights off and then Vanessa read Yertle The Turtle to all of the Level 2 students. It was a relaxing and enjoyable day of reading for everybody!
Last week we started a new project to show what we've learned about natural resources and being good stewards of the earth. The Plovers are working together to design an eco-friendly school! First, we watched a TED Talk about a green school in Bali that was built using mostly local and renewable resources. You can see the talk here: http://www.ted.com/talks/john_hardy_my_green_school_dream.html. Then, everybody worked on individual drawings or maps. Next, we will break into groups and decide how to incorporate everybody's wonderful ideas into one big school. There will be gardens, animals, an outdoor lunchroom, a river and a pond, and a real tree house. We will spend the next 3 weeks designing and constructing a model of our eco-friendly school.
