Third Grade Math Parent Info
Last week, third grade mathematicians practiced measuring perimeter of polygons. At home, you can encourage your child to estimate and measure distances in practical situations. How far is it across our kitchen table? How many people can fit comfortably on the couch? What is the perimeter of the new rug—will it fit in the bedroom? You and your child can go outside to measure larger distances. How many yards is it to the end of the block? What is the distance in feet between two trees? Is the perimeter of the sandbox larger or smaller than the perimeter of the flower garden? You can also involve your child in your own measurement activities - hobbies such as sewing and carpentry are a natural for this.
Current 4th Grade Math Topics:
- Multiplication: Check out Khan Academy if your kiddo needs practice!
- Division with remainders
- Justify your answer! Students are working on explaining their thinking out loud and in writing.
- All 4th grade math students should be practicing their multiples DAILY
Weekly Review
Last week, we began the preliminary rounds of the National Geographic Bee to determine the Plover class representative. There are 7 rounds of competition and each student individually answers a question in every round. The questions are about US and World geography. In some rounds, students receive multiple answers to choose from and in other rounds, the questions are open-ended. For more information, please visit: http://www.nationalgeographic.org/bee. Only 4th-8th graders are allowed to participate in the National Bee, so Plovers who are 3rd graders just play along for practice! Next year, they'll have an opportunity to represent our class. I expect we will finish the class competition by Wednesday to determine our class representation for the school-wide Geo Bee on February 3rd!
