Weekly Review
Last week, the Plovers built prototypes of their mini golf course designs. With some help from Oliver, the creator of Twin Pines Country Club, the students came up with a list of requirements for their holes. Then, they worked individually or in partners to make a small model out of recycled materials in the classroom. The class decided they wanted the theme of the mini golf course to be scientists, so they used decorations and obstacles to represent interesting facts about a scientist that they researched. The Plovers then used their opinion writing skills to write a short speech about why their design should be selected for the class business!
We are continuing with our read aloud: City of Ember. This is a science fiction novel about an underground city that is running out of supplies and electricity. The Plovers are keeping track of interesting vocabulary words and writing about what happens in each chapter. See if you and your student can use a few of this week's vocab words in your daily conversations: illegible, jostling and unintended! And here are a few questions you can discuss with your Plover:
- Who did Lina share the letter with? Who would you have shown it to?
- How long was the blackout? Why aren't people talking about it?
- Why do you think the citizens of Ember have to take so many vitamins?
