Math Notes
In Third Grade Math, we wrapped up our study of polygons with a scavenger hunt in the classroom. Students looked for examples of quadrilaterals, such as parallelograms, trapezoid, rectangles and rhombuses, around the room and practiced measuring the perimeter. This week, we will continue to review and build on material covered in the beginning of the year, including place value, estimation, telling time and solving story problems. Students who are able to demonstrate proficiency in these skills will complete a challenge project, and other students will receive additional support and small-group instruction. Our next unit will focus on multiplication and division.
Last week in 4th Grade Math, students worked on reviewing skills from December. We focused on place value understanding and working with large numbers. We also began our focus on multiplying large numbers. Ask your Puffin to draw an array for 15 x 12. Students also need to continue their multiplication fact fluency at home as well as at school.
Weekly Review
On Thursday, the Plovers submitted a proposal to Karen and Vanessa to create a used bookstore for FGCS! This proposal was the result of many classroom conversations and a lot of hard work! In addition to filling out the necessary paper work to submit a project proposal, students wrote persuasive letters to Karen and Vanessa explaining their hopes and dreams for the bookstore. The quality of the students' writing is impressive and inspiring! I will send home copies of students' letters this week, as well as find a way to post each letter on our website. The Plovers will share their proposal with the entire school at the All School Meeting this week. Parents are welcome to attend and learn more about this exciting idea! All School Meetings take place at Central School (the Forest Grove School District Office on Main Street) and begin at 9:40am. We will also present our idea to the parent volunteer group later this month.
Last week, we completed the preliminary rounds of the National Geographic Bee to determine the Plover class representative. There were 7 rounds of competition and each student answered a question in every round. The questions were about US and World geography. In some rounds, students receive multiple answers to choose from and in other rounds, the questions were open-ended. For more information, please visit: www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee. Only 4th-8th graders are allowed to participate in the National Bee, so Plovers who are 3rd graders just played along for practice! Next year, they'll have an opportunity to represent our class. Congratulations Dublin Wilger! Dublin answered 5 out of 7 questions correctly and will represent our class Tuesday morning at the FGCS GeoBee!
