Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we will use our O&A time to prepare for Celebrations of Learning. On display Wednesday night will be examples from our earthquakes and engineering projects, as well as some of the things Plovers are working during their weekly academic choice time.
Next week, we will jump onto the Oregon Trail through a program at the Washington County Museum. This trip will happen on Thursday instead of Wednesday. We'll tour the museum and check out a special exhibit on display this month about Forest Grove! If you would like to visit the museum with your family, it is free for all FG residents on February 20th, and free for families every second Saturday of the month. To learn more about these programs, visit: http://www.washingtoncountymuseum.org. Please join us as a chaperone for this trip!
Volunteer Opportunities
Out & About Chaperone - 2-3 chaperone needed for Washington County Museum (2/25). Chaperones are welcomed to meet us at the museum in downtown Hillsboro - located in the same building as Starbucks at 120 E Main Street. Our tour begins at 10am.
Library Chaperones - 2 chaperones needed for our next library trip (2/22).
Breakfast Donations - Fruit and cereal/bagels needed for this week.
Literature Circles and Book Clubs
All Plovers will meet with their book clubs 1-2 times this week! The books students are currently reading are: Balto, Buffalo Before Breakfast, Chicken Squad, Phoebe the Spy, and Steal Away. Students will have time in class to read and write about their book, but some students may choose to read at home and complete their book club assignment as extra homework. I do not want this to be a burden for families, so if your Plover seems worried about completing their assigned reading or writing, please let me know so I can help their book club figure out a more reasonable pace.
Weekly Review
Last week, we extended the Great Kindness Challenge for another week and looked for new ways to make a difference. In writing, the Plovers wrote a persuasive speech about a noteworthy person in our school community. Students also worked in small groups to plan and lead a kindness activity every day. On Monday, we invited the Level 1 classes to a dance party. On Tuesday, we delivered books to the Free Little Libraries on Pacific's campus. On Wednesday, we made valentines for the seniors at Jennings McCall Assisted Living. On Thursday, we surprised the office with a visit from Dinobaby. And on Friday, we celebrated our classroom community with a special brunch and card exchange.
We also started a project on the Oregon Trail last week. Students brainstormed desirable personality traits of a successful emigrant and traits that might hold them back while traveling on the trail. Also, students formed wagon family groups and created their own characters. We will be studying the Oregon Trail from the perspective of our characters. This week, we will learn about why pioneers wanted to move to Oregon, and then write farewell letters to friends and loved ones. We are almost ready hit the trail!
