Upcoming Out and Abouts
We will use our Out & About time this month for Engineering Labs! This week, students will invent, test and refine solutions to problems in popular fairy tales. For one challenge, teams can construct a house of toothpicks for the Three Little Pigs. Their creation should support at least 20 grams of mass and withstand wind from a fan. The other option is to build a raft for the Billy Goats using only straws and pipe cleaners! It must support 10 grams of mass and float for at least 10 seconds!
Volunteer Opportunities
1. Breakfast Donations - Fruit needed Friday 12/15.
Weekly Review
We visited the Oregon Historical Society and Portland Art Museum last week to see Native American artifacts. Students used a strategy called "See-Think-Wonder" as they explored the exhibits in the art museum. Each Plover chose 2 pieces of Native American art from different regions and answered the following questions:
- What do you see?
- What do you think about that?
- What does it make you wonder?
Another highlight for many students was walking though the LAIKA exhibit and seeing how movies such as Coraline and Box Trolls were made. As we head into our study of storytelling and fairy tales, we are hoping to incorporate some ideas from our visit into our own project work.
