Weekly Review
Last week, Plovers worked on the Smarter Balanced ELA (reading/writing) Performance Task. This activity asks students to read 2-3 short articles and respond to a narrative, opinion or informational prompt using evidence from the texts. This task is expected to take 1-2 weeks. Please help support your Plover by: encouraging them to do their best, making sure they eat breakfast and bring a snack, and helping them get plenty of sleep. Testing is administered in the computer lab in short sessions, and students have the opportunity to work on the same test over multiple sessions so they can work at their own pace.
Level 2 joined the Level 3 classrooms at the library last week for a Metro presentation called "I Just Don't Buy That!" The educators presented five skits and songs about the choices people make when shopping and how disposing of unwanted items has an impact on the environment. The assembly addressed three big ideas that 4th graders should remember from our study of consumerism and waste last year (and 3rd graders will learn more about next year):
• Natural resources are used to make the things we need or want but are limited.
• There are many things each of us can do to reduce our impact on the earth.
• Advertising and peer pressure affect buying habits.
