Upcoming Out and Abouts
This week, we will take time to work on our habitat model and animal research.
Volunteer Opportunities - http://vols.pt/drMimF
I would like to have some extra snacks available on SBAC testing days, so if you are able to donate a healthy snack (fruit, cheese sticks, granola bars, or something else easy to distribute and eat) for the class, sign up on the breakfast donation page for any of the following testing days: Wednesday 5/6, Thursday 5/7, Monday 5/11 or Tuesday 5/12.
Math Notes
Last week in Third Grade math, we continued our study of fractions by looking at how to build wholes from fractional parts (1/2 + 3/6 = 1). We also discussed equivalent fractions by playing a game with pattern blocks called Fraction Cookies! You might build on our recent work with equivalent fractions while cooking at home. If a recipe call for one cup of an ingredient, pretend that measuring cup is missing or broken! Ask your child how else you could measure that amount (perhaps 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4). You might check their answer by pouring those amounts into the one-cup measure to see whether they fill the cup exactly!
This week fourth grade mathematicians will take the practice state test in preparation for next week's test. Students will participate in review/vocabulary activities as well as continue our study of fractions and decimals.
Weekly Review
Last week, Plovers worked on their first Smarter Balanced ELA (reading/writing) assessment.
Testing is administered in the computer lab in short sessions, and students have the opportunity to work on the same test over multiple sessions so they can work at their own pace. Many Plovers took 4-5 days to finish up this first portion of the test. On May 5th, we will start the Performance Task, which will ask students to read 2-3 short articles and respond to a prompt using evidence from the texts. This task is expected to take 1-2 weeks. Please help support your Plover by: encouraging them to do their best, making sure they eat breakfast and bring a snack, and helping them get plenty of sleep.
Our Oregon habitat model is growing and changing shape! Being able to work on building and creative problem solving has been a nice opportunity on afternoons after testing! Soon, groups will begin creating their animal's second habitat. We are in need of a few additional items for our models. If you have any of these materials at home or would be willing to purchase one of the items, please send it in with your student by May 8th.
- Masking Tape
- Corks
- Craft glue (Tacky Glue)
- Green and brown pipe cleaners
