Reading Itinerary Due Thursday, April 7th
Plovers have received a reading itinerary to track the time they spend reading (or listening to reading) at home and at school for 7 days. They have a folder to hold their itinerary and it needs to travel between home and school every day. The purpose of this activity is to help students notice and reflect on their own reading habits. Parents can provide support by setting a timer during reading time and reminding students to fill out their form every time they read.

Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Wednesday, we have our first Out and About for our outdoor skills and emergency preparedness unit! We will visit the Forest Grove Fire Station to learn about first aid and calling 911. Next week, we will go to the garden to learn more about weather (and also do some work)!
Weekly Review
Before Spring Break, we completed our persuasive writing unit called "Changing The World." For the final writing piece, the Plovers and Puffins decided to work together on an important problem in our community: Earthquake Preparedness. Each student wrote an essay about why it is important for our school to be ready for an earthquake and how they want to help. Our goal is to create classroom-sized emergency supply kits for each classroom at FGCS!
The Puffins have created a Donors Choose page to raise money for this project and I will be sending the Plovers' letters to local businesses to gather additional donations like tarps, tools, food and water. On the Donors Choose page, you can read more about how the students of Level 2 plan to complete this service learning project. After reading all about it, please consider a donation! If you choose to give (any amount helps!), you’ll receive updates and photos of this project in action and our students’ sincere gratitude. All donations collected by Level 2, through Donors Choose or local businesses, will be combined to assemble the emergency supply kits. Also, if you know anyone who might be interested in supporting our project, please pass this message along!
Last week, wagon families completed their journey on the Oregon Trail and imagined their new lives in Oregon. At the AT Smith House, Plovers farmed, baked, played and celebrated! Students worked in groups to open a business, like a blacksmith shop or pharmacy, and then had time to shop in their new community. Back in class, each student wrote a final story about a struggle on the Oregon Trail and showed what they learned on a post assessment. Next, we will consider what other stories are important to Oregon's history and students will have the opportunity to complete a small research project about a historical event of their choice. We will be using the Studies Weekly website to help with our research, and Plovers created accounts last week which they can use for reading at home!
