Math Notes
This week in Third Grade math, we will take the state math test (OAKS). On Monday and Tuesday, students will practice using calculators and review questions from the sample test. We will start testing on Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30. Testing is administered in the computer lab in short sessions, and students have the opportunity to work on the same test over multiple sessions so they can work at their own pace. Please help support your third grader by: encouraging them to do their best, making sure they eat breakfast and bring a snack, and helping them get plenty of sleep. If you have any questions or concerns about the state math test, please contact Laura at [email protected].
There is no math homework this week.

Weekly Review
We had some very exciting events last week! On Monday, we helped plant a new tree in Rogers Park. Our class worked for over an hour to dig a large enough hole for the tree! Luckily, we had beautiful weather and when we were finished, our class received a flag for our classroom and some refreshments. There is an article and a video about the Arbor Day event on the Oregonian's website: http://www.oregonlive.com/forest-grove/index.ssf/2013/04/forest_grove_students_add_tree.html
On Tuesday, students engineered and tested balloon boats. Their goal was to design a boat that would float, balance and travel at least 100 cm. They were given a choice of materials, including recycled plastic containers, straws, balloons and masking tape. After testing their creations in the kiddie pool, everyone made improvements to their boats and tested them for a second time. Throughout this project, students practiced and documented the four components to the engineering design process: 1. Identify a problem to be solved. 2. Generate possible solutions. 3. Test solutions and collect data. 4. Analyze and interpret results.
On Thursday, we joined the other classes for the Roots and Shoots Fund Run. We had another sunny day and everyone walked or ran on the track for 20 minutes. Lily's dad got some great photos of the event, which I will share on the class photo page! Friday was the Earth Day Bike Ride and many Plovers made an appearance after school. I believe photos and video from the bike ride will be coming soon to the FGCS website.
