Upcoming Out and Abouts
This Wednesday, we will go to Tom McCall Forest to build shelters, work on collecting weather data and learn about transmitting messages using sounds and light! On May 11th, we will go to Portland to see Oregon Children's Theater perform James and the Giant Peach. On May 18th, we will spend the day at Gales Creek Campground, practicing outdoor skills. Chaperones will be needed for both trips and I will post sign-ups next week.
State (SBAC) Testing
Level 2 students will begin state testing on Monday, April 25th. Testing is administered in the computer lab in short sessions, and students have the opportunity to work on the same test over multiple sessions so they can work at their own pace. Please help support your Plover by: encouraging them to do their best, making sure they eat breakfast and bring a snack, and helping them get plenty of sleep.
Volunteer Opportunities
Library Chaperones - 2 chaperones needed for our next library trip (5/16).
Become a Summer Garden Steward! - Please consider helping care for the garden this summer!
I would like to have some extra snacks available on SBAC testing days, so if you are able to donate a healthy snack (fruit, cheese sticks, granola bars, or something else easy to distribute and eat) for the class, sign up on the breakfast donation page for any of the following testing days: Thursday 4/28, Monday 5/2, Tuesday 5/3, Wednesday 5/4 or Thursday, 5/5.
Weekly Review
We dedicated a lot of time last week to our new writing unit: Bringing History To Life. Each Plover has chosen a topic from Oregon's history that they would like to learn more about, such as fur trading, Native American conflicts or changes to the natural landscape. They will write an informational report to teach others all about their subject! So far, students have been reading a lot and taking notes to become history experts. Some students have started on their drafts by writing exciting leads that introduce the setting and characters, just like we learned in storytelling!
We visited the garden last week to record weather data and learn about humidity. This is part of our spring project focus on outdoor skills and emergency preparedness. Erin also taught the Plovers about medicinal herbs in the garden, and then used them to make a healing balm that can be used for chapped lips, dry skin, burns, blisters or bug bites! Many of the plants that we think of as weeds turn out to be pretty useful. Enjoy!
Recipe:
- 1 part beeswax
- 2 parts organic coconut oil
- Wild garden herbs: fennel (bug repellent), thistle (muscle aches), dandelion (high in vitamins), plantain (bee stings and bug bites), yarrow (cuts), broad-leaved dock (blisters), and crimson clover (burns)
