Upcoming Out and Abouts
We will participate in an Arbor Day celebration at Rogers Park on Monday, April 22nd. On Tuesday, during our regular Out and About time, students will complete an engineering project in class. Next week, we will take a bus to Fernhill Wetlands; we will need 2-3 parent chaperones for this trip.
Math Notes
This week in Third Grade math, we will begin a new unit which focuses on computation with numbers up to 10,000. Students will use models (number lines and pictures) and the standard algorithm to add and subtract 3- and 4-digit numbers. Additionally, we will focus on preparing for the OAKS math test. Students will review number patterns, telling time, counting money, calculating perimeter, attributes of 2D and 3D shapes, rounding (to tens and hundreds), and estimating in word problems.
For homework this week, students will complete the Rounding to the Nearest Ten and Rounding to the Nearest Hundred worksheets.
This week in Fourth Grade math, we will focus heavily on reviewing concepts from the year as well as math vocabulary. The concepts we will focus on reviewing are:
- Adding & subtracting decimals
- Money
- Time
- Perimeter, Area, and Volume
- 2D/3D Shapes
- Comparing Decimals and Whole Numbers
- Fractions and Decimals
- Division/Multiplication Word Problems
- Vocabulary
Homework this week will involve creating vocabulary flashcards and may require the use of a dictionary and/or the internet to help articulate definitions. Students may borrow a dictionary if needed.
FYI: OAKS Math Testing will begin the week of April 29th

Weekly Review
We had a short week last week and we used most of our time together to prepare for student-led conferences. Hopefully at conferences, you were able to see your student's self-reflection and a sample of their recent work in reading, writing, math, Out & About, and project work. If you have any further questions or concerns, please send me an email at [email protected].
For our Out & About last Tuesday, we walked to Ash Street Field (adjacent to the B Street Trail) and helped a crew from Metro plant native plants along the edge of the field. This is a part of a larger project involving Metro and our school to restore Ash Street Field to a natural area. The Plovers (and our wonderful parent volunteers) planted over 400 plants in 2 hours! The assortment of tarweed and blue eyed grass that we planted were started from seed by the Level 1 classes in early January. We had beautiful, sunny weather for our service project and many helping hands!
